Born in Washingtn D.C., Carl graduated BS, Mechanical Engineering from Virginia Tech, studied engineering management at Santa Clara University, and is a registered professional mechanical engineer.

After graduation in 1974, Carl moved to San Jose to work for General Electric’s Nuclear Energy Division.Between 1974 and 1978 he traveled to nuclear power plants on the East Coast and in Japan doing preoperational testing or outage management.By fall of 1978 he met Dan O’Brien; and formed Salas O’Brien Engineers, Inc.He has worked continuously since that time; surveying, testing, planning or designing hundreds of energy-efficiency projects,infrastructureandutilityprojects,andalternative, central and distributed energyplants.Alongwithhis real world approach to facilities and clean energy engineering, he has assisted in quality control, forensics, financial analysis, and expert witness testimony.Over this same period, he developed and conducted a nation-wide series of training seminars associated with Energy Management, Sustainable Design, HVAC Controls and Central Plants.

Carl is the past National president of the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE) and is the current chairperson of AEE’s International Energy Awards.He is an active Rotarian, and the past President of the Rotary Club of San Jose where he chairs the Youth Exchange Committee.He and his wife, Marianne, have been married for 32 years and have 2 grown children.Marianne is the co-author of their 1986 book entitled:Refrigeration CFC’s.She was Carl’s partner and CFO until the sale of Salas O’Brien in 2006.Carl and Marianne are actively involved in real estate purchase; and management of their own properties. Carl has been able to apply his practical knowledge of financial matters in real estate to the many financial issues associated with his work at Salas O’Brien.Since the sale of Salas O’Brien in 2006, Carl has continued working as a loyal employee, trainer and mentor doing the work he loves.
