Achieving Net Zero Plus (NZP) status is a lofty goal for any high performance building, especially for an existing building. Lofty, but achievable: in 2016, the Electrical Training Institute (ETI) In Los Angeles became the nation’s largest NZP commercial building retrofit. A Net Zero Plus facility produces more total energy than it will consume over a measured time period. Project best practices at ETI included leveraging new IoT technologies solutions to transform existing facilities into high performance buildings: integrating building automation systems with onsite renewable generation and storage systems, connecting energy-efficient plug load and lighting systems, vetting traditional, non-traditional and hybrid equipment as well as techniques to integrate, network monitor and manage the systems. The retrofit reduced total energy consumption by 51% and the building now produces 185,000 KWh/year more energy than it consumes. Session attendees will learn to: • Understand the key elements of an NZP building • Identify new IoT technology solutions to integrate and optimize building system operations • Estimate the scope and depth of a timeline, budget and staffing required to complete an NZP retrofit • Design a preliminary project blueprint including the latest in energy cost reduction strategies.
